Common Hiring Mistakes – here are 5 that you need to avoid!

Find out more about common hiring mistakes to avoid if you are in the process of adding to your team or perhaps you will be in the very near future.

Common Hiring Mistakes..

Not reviewing the job description

You recruited for this job role a couple of years ago, so you use the same job description and put an advert out, hoping to get the perfect candidate….

Doing this is of course is the easy option, however spending a bit of time and energy on ensuring the detail is accurate and that it provides clear detail of what the opportunity entails are critical – being too vague or general can invite a lot of applications, which will make your life far more difficult.  Not only this but the way job descriptions and adverts are written have changed rapidly over the last few years.  Make sure you are attracting the right candidates and those who are genuinely interested in working for you and the opportunity that you have to offer.

Relying on job ads

You’ve placed the advert, so now you just sit back and wait for the perfect candidate to apply, right? Wrong.  The perfect candidate for you may not be actively looking right now, so passive candidates should always be considered.  Make sure you are proactive with your search – the Corr Recruitment team can help you further with this.

Not preparing for the interview

Generally, candidates spend many hours preparing for an interview, yet most interviewers spend very little time at all.  Make sure you thoroughly read through the CV, take a look at the candidate’s LinkedIn page, and make sure you have put together questions which are relevant and will provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision.

Background Checks

Another very common hiring mistake and although it can be tempting, once you’ve been through the interview stages to make the decision you rush through the offer letter and get the candidate started with you.  Now, we’re not saying you should take your time, as good candidates will not hang around, but make sure that you are completing your due diligence thoroughly to ensure that everything you have discussed is accurate.  If it is a permanent role you’re recruiting for make sure that you are confident that this is someone who will stay with your business and commit.

Poor communication

Finally, common hiring mistake number 5.  You need to make sure that you are keeping in touch with candidates throughout the recruitment journey.  Keeping the potential candidate/s engaged throughout will ensure that the individual/s are excited about joining your business.  You might want to invite them in to meet the team before the start date, if government/covid restrictions permit.
